Spring Cleaning

For whatever crazy reason, Crossing Zebras has been attracting more and more capsuleers with each passing day. The original CZ site was designed by myself using a fairly simple tumblr template with a fairly basic server for our media. Throughout 2012, these both proved to be more than sufficient for our demands. Since the start of 2013, the volume of traffic and the sheer amount of bandwidth required due to the number of visitors to the site has increased exponentially. Something needed to be done and quickly.

Jeg quickly got a new server set up with much increased bandwidth to feed all you media hungry citizens of New Eden. That part was relatively painless – he tinkered away in the back end (smirk) and got all the media ported over without a hitch. Then work began on the new site you are currently looking at. Jeg was the guy who was going to be making the site while I was the guy who knew exactly what I wanted but with none of the requisite technical terms necessary to easily explain it. This is a pretty nightmarish situation for Jeg.

How we got there, I don’t know. Actually, I do – Jeg was incredibly patient and put in an insane number of hours on this project. It would have been a difficult job as it is without me deciding that we needed something else or had to tweak this or that needed adjusted a thousand times. The final result is pretty impressive though if I do say so myself.

We both hope you like the new site. If you do, make sure and let Jeg know. It’s his blood, sweat and tears that have made it happen. If you don’t like any particular aspect of the site, tell us in the comments below and we’ll have a look at it. If anything is broken or not working as it should tell us too and I’ll crack the whip until Jeg fixes it.

Fly safe,

Xander Phoena

The good looking, funny, intelligent member of the team, Xander set up Crossing Zebras with Jeg in April 2012 mainly because he was talking too much about Eve on his other podcast. Playing the game for almost five years, Xander still has absolutely zero clue about how to actually play Eve but somehow still manages to talk a good game.

  • love the new layout

    • Jeg_Elsker

Thanks Wiggles, We are pretty pleased with it as well! it gives a lot more stuff for people to come look at, and will allow us to do some pretty cool stuff moving forward! watch this space!

  • Sexy!

  • http://crossingzebras.com/csm8/ <- it's a bit weird that there is so much empty space on the right.

    • Jeg_Elsker

Yep, the wider layout makes it look far worse than it did on the old site. It looks better on mobiles, but its a non excuse. simply a content edit that we will get through in due course! thanks for the feedback though! We are delighted with the result, and I am delighted that its (pretty much) done.

    nice update to the site

  • Your site looks great. Thanks Jeg!!

Great revamp and not too much of a bother but is this why my feed reader has reset all the read status on the posts? Did the RSS feed GUID change?

    • xanderphoena

      I don’t even know what a GUID is 🙁

I’m going to leave Jeg to answer this one. I do know other people have said that all our previous posts have popped up on their RSS feeds again. I have no idea of the technical reason why.

      • SpaceNoob

GUID = Globally Unique Identifier. but it looks like it’s classed as a non permanent link and I’m not sure what feed readers do in that case. www2 appears to be popping up in the URLs in some places and www appears to be missing in others. There was the change from the /post/BIGNUMBERHERE/ to the DATE/READABLETHING style of URL for the pages (nice SEO work btw).

I wouldn’t worry too much, and it wouldn’t be the first time I saw WordPress fuck up an RSS feed set up.

Tell Jeg good luck with the fix. If I can help then just let me know.

        • Jeg_Elsker

I expect pretty much everything changed with the RSS since the old feed was generated by Tumblr and now its wordpress. the www2 part you are seeing was our “temporary” address space while we did the migration, so i would expect that there are a few things in the database to tidy up, something that as soon as i get a free few hours I will look into. www, www2 and no subdomain are all valid though, so it wont refuse access (there should be redirects to correct it).

I simply re-added the crossing zebras RSS feed to my reader and it worked fine for me, though no idea how the mileage on that will go.

What RSS feed are you currently using? and what reader.. I will do some digging at the issue over the weekend.

Wow! Well done! This place looks great!

    • opsec

I’m replying to my own post just to say that I am rather impressed with how you’ve set things up here – and I’m not easily impressed. Again, well done!

  • Excellent revamp, great work
