Crossing Zebras Episode 31

Another episode with just Xander and Jeg but there is plenty for them to get their teeth into since Episode 30 hit the airwaves. First up we have the awesome Crossing Zebras Community Free For All which happened last Saturday in Asakai. The two of us break down exactly what went out in that famous low sec system last weekend. Then we break down the elephant in the room – the CCP/Somer situation and how it has developed in the past couple of weeks with confirmation that CCP gave Somer staff thirty Ishukone Watch Scorpions as a gift for their efforts for the community. Was it right or wrong? We discuss that and plenty more. About the author

Xander Phoena

The good looking, funny, intelligent member of the team, Xander set up Crossing Zebras with Jeg in April 2012 mainly because he was talking too much about Eve on his other podcast. Playing the game for almost five years, Xander still has absolutely zero clue about how to actually play Eve but somehow still manages to talk a good game.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I just can’t get upset about the Somer Blink stuff. I’m not sure how much they are involved in EVE Vegas, but I know they are one of the major sponsors for the event.

    • Green Gambit

You’d think a “major sponsor” would be mentioned on the event web site… http://www.evevegas2.com/

      • Axe

Somer Blink and Steel Series have been listed as the sponsors and suppliers of prizes for the pvp and poker tournaments that will be held at EVE Vegas. I’m not sure how far they are involved beyond that.

        • Jeg_Elsker

You are absolutely entitled to not be bothered by the whole Somer blink “thing”. I think it is worthy of mention that I am not so much bothered about what happened, more the issue underlying.. the issue of communication, CCP have processes in place to avoid these sorts of drama, I find it rather alarming that they are not being used.

I personally have an issue with the whole somer thing, but that is my stance and one shared by a few (not everyone) others in the community, but the somer thing is merely a symptom of the issue of communication. What is the CSM for if not to avoid these sorts of problems!

          • rek

With that i agree but on the other hand, if i were a CCP employee, i wouldn’t want to run everything my the players before i was allowed to do something for the community… I’d probably just say “fuck it” and do nothing.

I actually think it’s a good think to make more of the scorpions available to the community and i can’t think of a fairer way to distribute them than giving the to a popular site like somer… maybe what CCP should have do was insisted that somer take no isk from people who bet on the scorpion auctions.

          • Jeg_Elsker

I agree with everything except the Somer involvement, the for profit aspect makes that something I feel is inappropriate. That is however just my opinion, and one I don’t expect everyone to agree with.

remember, the scorps are gifts to the staff of somer for their good work (that they are paid hansomly for), the other ships were given out as prizes in a lottery outside of the game.

In any case, there are arguements on both sides of the fence. I am not in a position to say CCP is wrong, I do however think it was a poor decision.

  • Rek

wow three episodes dedicated to some stupid give-away. I don’t don’t think the average player gives a fuck if ccp choose to give special ships away… It’s there game after all.

If anything, giving them to a site like somer blink is a good thing to do because everyone has a chance to win one.

You’ve made your point, so move on.

) Ep 30 was recorded after the gold magnate thing. It was, if you follow the forums, #tweetfleet, etc, fairly big news and many people found it an interesting discussion, taking positions either side. Ep 31 was recorded after the iScorp giveaway was confirmed, the community went crazy on the subject and CCP felt the need to officially respond. The third ‘episode’ you mention was my monthly CSM interview and the first since any of the Somer stuff had came to light. My journalistic integrity (what little there may be) would have seriously been called into question had I not discussed it them. b) The cool thing about doing a podcast is you as the host get to decide what to talk about. If you don’t like our subjects on CZ, please feel free to go try one of the many other excellent Eve podcasts. Or better still, start your own and drop me a link. I’d love to listen.

tl;dr – Get over yourself. If you expect a ‘current affairs’ Eve podcast to ignore what is far away the most talked about story in Eve at the moment as new information comes to light, you are sadly mistaken. The ‘point’ would have been laid to rest with only episode 30 and the CSM interview had it not since then come to light that further transgressions had come up regarding the Somer relationship. And guess what – if something new comes to light tomorrow, we’ll probably be talking about this all over again come 32. Thanks for listening.

I may not be interested in the subject, but I don’t mind you covering it. I understand it matters to many players in Eve. The part that bothers me a little is the amount of time on each episode you spend talking about it, I feel you end up making the same point over and over again. I love your show, but these past few episodes I have had to skip through to see if you would talk about anything else. I have listened from the beginning of your show and I am looking forward to your future episodes. I hope you are able to go back to mixing it up a little.

        • xanderphoena

As long as there are other things the community is interested in and discussing, we will as always be mixing it up. If some alarming new information comes to light on the CCP/Somer thing AND the community appears interested in continuing to discuss it, there’s a good chance it’ll come up again in 32. I’m pretty confident/hoping that doesn’t happen however. Thanks for the feedback – appreciated.

      • rek

lol you have the nerve to tell me to get over myself after you just whined about how other community sites are getting things that you aren’t? “we only get 1 plex but they get more stuff”… yeah, yeah, i know this wasn’t you main point but it started to sound like that in the end.

To be clear, i understand the community frustration with this but all this fuss was unnecessary and instead of the recent podcasts being informative and topical, i could have go to any threadnaugh and heard the same whiny and obvious complaints.

And yeah, no shit i’m free to not listen. Thanks for stating the obvious. I listen because i want to and correct me if i’m wrong but you regularly ask for feedback.. but I guess if you don’t like the feedback you think it’s cool to say “fuck you, go away”.

As always guys love the show, keep up the good work 😉

        • xanderphoena

‘lol you have the nerve to tell me to get over myself after you just whined about how other community sites are getting things that you aren’t?’

Not only have you ignored most of the points in my original reply, you have fabricated some new ones to support your argument. To be clear, we never whined that someone else got something that we didn’t. Not once. Ever. We very VERY clearly stated on the episode that there are many, many more deserving entities than us. The issue isn’t that we didn’t get something, this issue is who did, how it was decided, what they got and the in-clandestine nature of it all. If you think out issues with this are somehow down to jealousy, I don’t even know what to say to you.

We do appreciate feedback as long as it is constructive. Saying ‘please ignore the main topic of discussion in the Eve community as alarming new information comes out on your Eve current affairs podcast’ isn’t constructive. Thanks for listening and thanks for the feedback but remember, we are here to discuss the key current points the community are interesting. As is clear from all those threadnoughts you mention, it is the current Somer situation. For the record by the way, I know many, many people who ignore the Eve forums by and large because of people sperging on those threadnoughts you mention – I am one of them.

Whatever mate, i call it like i see it… At the end of the day, i would rather CCP do things like this to thank the people that do things for the community, than not do anything at all but a agree that giving billions of isk to a single entity is outrageous. Never the less, i think dedicating 3 podcasts to a subject the the majority of player probably don’t care about is over the top.

I look forward to your next show but i’m hoping that you discuss a different subject like the upcoming patch or other relevant in game topics for instance.

          • xanderphoena

Again, ignoring what I have said in previous posts. We haven’t dedicated a single episode to the Somer stuff. It has been the main topic of discussion in the past two main episodes of CZ and in the October CSM interview. In 30 and 31, we also discussed other topics including, at length in 30, the new expansion Rubicon. But please keep continue to ‘call it like you see it’ even when what you see isn’t actually the case.

I can’t wait to hear your podcast. Please link me to it when it happens. I will be sure to publicise it on CZ.

          • rek

Whatever dude i wasn’t ignoring you and you’re just being childish now.

Sorry i spoke. I won’t trouble you again.

          • xanderphoena

If by ‘being childish’ you mean ‘directly responding to your points while you ignore mine’ then fair enough.

  • Max

Idk I kind of agree with rek.

I normally enjoy the show but I got tired of hearing the hosts position on the somer blink thing… No need for the hostility towards one of the listeners imo.

I was looking forward to winning the ishukone scorpion :'(

    • xanderphoena

My hostility comes from comments such as ‘wow three episodes dedicated to some stupid give-away. ‘ which shows absolutely zero respect for the opinions myself and Jeg have shared in 30 and 31. It also seems strange that Rek feels that this isn’t an issue when CCP and CSM8 both clearly feel it is based on their public statements.

It’t even worse because three episodes weren’t ‘dedicated to some stupid give-away’. Two had the Somer issue as the key talking point based on recent newly released information and the amount of active players talking about the problem. The third was the first CSM monthly interview since the Gold Magnate issue. Were you seriously expecting me to just not discuss that with Trebor?

We have been criticised in these comments many times before and I appreciate when people present well constructed and constructive criticism. It helps us get better. Comments such as ‘ignore the main topic of discussion on #tweetfleet and the Eve forums as well as on news sites such as TMC’ isn’t constructive criticism – it’s dumb.

I would like an iScorp too 🙁

      • Jay

I think this is a case of ‘the players are always right when they say there’s an issue, but they’re usually wrong about what the issue is’. I think people aren’t getting annoyed by the topic so much as the rage surrounding it. All the blogs are talking about this issue, and most of us regular joes can’t really get the passion up to care about it.
I honestly don’t see it as a big issue. Why? In my mind, CCP is rewarding contributors to encourage people to contribute in new and interesting ways. To those of us not “officially sponsored”, it’s hard to see a difference between a plex and an Ishkur – although when you put it into context I can see why you’re miffed.
CCP blew it – I agree when I look at the market repercussions (although if the players are already extremely rich anyways? I could see why an Ishkur might seem like a more appropriate response). As for WHO they picked (which seems to be a point of extreme rage) – I could care less. I don’t care if they’re making a profit or doing it for the lulz – as long as they’ve brought new content to the game I’m happy. Love it or hate it, Somer is a new way to gamble. Now, if it turns out they’re actually involved in RMT, that should be dealt with appropriately (and as of posting this, it seems it has!)
But I digress. I don’t expect you to stop talking about this – especially after what Poetic just did – but can we talk about blogger rage a bit? And why things like Poetics move are incredibly bad for the community, not to mention immature? Inciting riots is a way to get CCPs attention, not fix the issues and – if this keeps up – it’ll only hurt the game.

        • xanderphoena

Jay, firstly thanks for taking the time to respond in such a cool, calm and comprehensive manner. I love when we get feedback from this.

You raise some great points including:

          – Are we getting over-excited about this? Does the average player care? Should be average player care more? Should we care less?

Maybe part of the reason some is us (including me personally) are getting so annoyed about this simply because so many people aren’t either because of apathy or ignorance?

          – Have some of the ‘angrier’ members of the community harmed the argument at all? Are we at CZ guilty of this? Maybe. I don’t think so. I certainly hope not. Those who have went out and RMTed helped or harmed the cause?

The only thing I would out and out disagree with you on is that Somer have contributed to the game itself. I’m not sure that’s true. They have helped sponsor in game events but would those events have happened otherwise? I think so. I’m not sure creating a new form of gambling in-game currency out of the game brings new content to the game as you put it.

That said pretty much everything else you have written has given me a lot of cause for thought. I’m going to think about it and talk about your post and the questions that have been raised from it on the next CZ.

Thanks again Jay. Great feedback and a really thought provoking reply to the episode.

          Fly safe,
          Xander

Shocker, i liked your Podcasts… until the last 3! I would be surprised CCP should allow you to still blag you are CCP certified after the that crap. A bit unprofessional in my thoughts… and quit just jabbering on wasting airtime “certified by CCP” we got it the 1st time.

    • xanderphoena

You do realise that the whole ‘CCP CERTIFIED #1’ thing is a very tongue in cheek joke started by another podcaster? It’s a bit of fun. To be 100% clear, we aren’t in any way ‘CCP certified’.
